North East and North Cumbria Suicide Prevention Network

Who are they?

North East and North Cumbria Suicide Prevention Network (NENC) is a team dedicated to suicide prevention across the Region.

Founded in April 2018. It has since grown and developed into a multi-agency leadership group. It launched involving people from different agencies and people with lived experiences, The network was launched on World Suicide Prevention Day.

They also work with universities on a variety of projects to further the research in different areas. NENC’s aim is to “work together to take action to reduce suicide, so that fewer people die by suicide and improve support for those affected”.

NENC work with two mental health trusts, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS (CNTW) and Tees, Esk and Wear Valley’s foundation NHS Trust.

They inform regions like Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and North Cumbria.

What support do they provide?
They aren’t a direct intervention service. They work together to improve services, access to resources and work to bridge
gaps across services and the community across the Region. They have a website and social media platforms where information on how to access support and help, including resources, is available.

They also provide free online training. This includes emotional resilience, self-harm awareness and response, suicide
awareness and suicide response.

Their aims

  • To reduce suicides, including in high-risk groups in all areas across the North East and North Cumbria
  • To reduce the incidence of self-harm and repeated selfharm
  • To reduce the impact of self-harm and suicide
  • To reduce the stigma of self-harm and suicide
